A dark fantasy book cover: an ornate white sword and a carved wooden lute lean together in the earth atop a hill, silhouetted against a starry indigo sky that fades into sunset-orange mountains. Title text above reads "Whispers of the Wyrm, Book One of the Bard and the Blade Saga, by A.A. Bennette" in rose-red serif type.
Whispers of the Wyrm

Romantasy / Epic Fantasy

The king's blade finds what it was made to hunt. The bard it finds first.

Dhaelen of Caelondor has spent fifteen years as the crown's instrument — the Wolf, they call him, the man who does what Thelan requires and carries the cost quietly. His final commission is simple: find the last dragon. End it. The dragonbone blade at his back has been waiting for exactly this since before he was born.

He does not expect the woman on the oak stump in the market square, singing the old songs the priests have been burning for thirty years. He does not expect to step between her and the blade meant for her. He does not expect the road north, the burn-scar country, the Hollow that has opinions about who it will hold.

He does not expect to stop being the crown's instrument.

Whispers of the Wyrm is a romantasy about two people walking the same road toward incompatible destinations — a soldier who has spent his life choosing the old steel over the bone blade, and a bard carrying music that could unmake a king, who has been smaller than she is for her entire life because it was safer. The Glass Crown prophecy says a blade of bone and a song of gold will meet. It does not say what they will choose when they do.

The burn-scar country has been patient. It has been waiting to become what the fire left room for it to

be.

So have they.

Dhaelen of Caelondor has spent his life moving between rooms he was sent into and roads he chose for himself. He is learning, in the political chambers of Highspire, what it means to be in both at once. The coalition has named what Hadna Vey'nael is. Naming a thing and protecting it are different problems. Kaltevon has understood this longer than either of them.

In the Eil'raen archive, older than the Faith's dragon registers by two centuries, something has been waiting. Not a threat. A record. Eight hundred years of careful attention to a bloodline — not watching it, cultivating it. The arrangement predates every instrument that has been used to hunt what Hadna is. Someone built the conditions for her existence before her mother was born. The archive knows who. It is not yet saying.

The Scriptorium has a new commission. The undefined entities clause has precedent now. Kaltevon is no longer working from the road.

And from Morvane, walking north, a woman named Wrenna Ashcombe carries songs that have not been heard since before the Dragonfall — songs that belong to Hadna, and that Hadna has not yet been told exist.

The Ember and the Thread is a book about what it costs to build something in the middle of something trying to dismantle it, and about an eight-hundred-year question arriving at the generation that will have to answer it.
