A Small Thing About Eeza

Eeza doesn't answer hard questions right away. She counts them out first, three breaths, always three, whether the question is about the road ahead or where to make camp before the light goes. Hadna noticed it early enough to time it once, silently, under her own breath, and never told her.

It isn't hesitation. Ask anyone who's travelled with her, and they'll tell you the opposite: she's the first to decide, the first to move. The pause comes after she already knows the answer. She just

makes you wait for it.

She wears a ring on her smallest finger, dull brass, dented on one side like it's been dropped more than once and never replaced. Nobody in the party has asked where it came from. Hadna almost did, once, at a table in some nameless roadside inn, and then didn't, watched Eeza turn the ring with her thumb instead, twice around, and let the question go.

She walks at the back of any group, even the ones she chose the direction for. Ask her why, and she'll shrug: someone has to watch the road behind. Nobody's caught her actually looking back, not once. Nobody's willing to bet that means she isn't.

She eats fast and finishes first, then sits with her hands still while everyone else is still working through their plates. Doesn't fidget. Doesn't fill the silence. Just waits, patient as a held breath, until the table's ready to move again.

Her voice carries a particular flatness when she's annoyed, not raised, just stripped of any inflection at all, like she's decided the situation doesn't deserve the effort of tone. It's more unsettling than shouting. People who've heard it once tend to choose their next words with more care.

She calls Hadna by her whole name. Never “Drake,” never any of the road-names Hadna answers to from everyone else on the way. Just Hadna, two syllables, said the same way every time, like she's the only one who bothered to remember it was a name and not a costume.
